➤ Flower n Heart: Idas Losin and Yuyoh Peilin Duo Exhibition

Flower n Heart: Idas Losin and Yuyoh Peilin Duo Exhibition

“Flower n Heart” traces a journey of cultural roots across two generations of Indigenous women artists. Mother Yuyoh Peilin explores the cultural heritage inherited from her grandmother through weaving, while daughter Idas Losin uses painting to mimic woven patterns, seeking her Austronesian roots and the diasporic paths of her community. Different in media, both share a persistent inquiry into identity: Where do I come from? Where am I going?

Yuyoh Peilin, a recipient of the Ministry of Education’s 113th Lifetime Dedication Award, was born in Hualien as a member of the Truku community and married into the Atayal community of Wulai. Guided by her talent and passion, she mastered Atayal weaving techniques, returned to her Truku roots to study ancestral diamond patterns, extended her practice to the neighboring Seediq community, and even traveled to Puli in Nantou to learn cross-stitch from the descendants of the Pazeh Plains Indigenous people. Decades of dedication have made weaving her unique language for connecting with culture and expressing herself to the world.

In Indigenous cultures, weaving carries collective memory, symbolizes the transmission of identity, and embodies matrilineal knowledge, giving this craft profound significance. While Idas Losin does not weave, she is drawn by the symbolism of facial tattoo patterns. Through painting and installation, she translates inner perceptions and life experiences, interlacing lines, colors, and totemic motifs to express self-identity and reinterpret traditional craft.

A highlight of the exhibition is the large-scale collaborative work “Weaving Life’s Red”, created from ramie cultivated and collected by Yuyoh Peilin over ten years. Traditionally used by the Atayal for clothing fibers, this piece carries memories of the land and reverence for life. Through weaving, the fibers come alive, blooming with new energy. “It is roots. It is blossoming. It is flower. It is the flow of life.” The work embodies generations of artistic knowledge and the collective memory of Indigenous peoples.

The exhibition title “Flower n Heart” evokes the heart enclosed by petals—like the beating heart at the center of intricate textile patterns, pulsing with cultural lifeblood. This motif highlights dialogue between individual and collective, past and present, and weaves a symbolic pathway of return for the two generations of artists.
