The Trio Hall

—Su Hui-Yu Solo Exhibition Transforms an Art Museum into a Film Studio, Leading Audiences to Witness the Making of an Absurd Yet Realistic Film

Artist Guide
What you are seeing is a “cinematic exhibition” or “exhibition cinema”, or it can also be thought of as a place of audiovisual production, where members of the audience can experience a process that entails drawing the storyboard, production meeting, audition, rehearsal, martial arts training, choreography, musical arrangement, and even being on site at the filming location. Finally, a political comedy packed with thorny issues and hellish gags will be produced by the end of the exhibition. This entire experience marks an interim conclusion for my “Re-shooting” series, which asks: Why don’t we tackle chauvinism, colonization, the Cold War, popular culture, mass media, and any pressing crises and dilemmas all at once? This proposal reflects the current new Cold War and extreme politics, and under such circumstances, what kind of humorous narratives can this East Asian island nation of ours come up with? The narratives conjured will then be widely circulated and passed down, as we exclaim to the world and also at ourselves: What the hell is going on?

The Trio Hall

The Trio Hall (2023) is the most significant institutional project to date by the Taiwanese-born internationally known artist Su Hui-Yu, specially conceived for the MoCA's spaces. It is a multimedia site-specific exhibition and a film making-project that originates from the "Xan Ting" (三廳, three halls) movie, a specific Taiwanese genre from the late 1970s, characterized by three specific settings: living room, dining room, and disco clubs. This genre was even popular in TV variety shows, a North American cultural importation, like the Modernist tradition in visual art. It reflected the escapism and subconscious desire for rebellion during the Taiwanese martial law era (1949-1987).

Su Hui-Yu has built over the years a distinctive practice. He creates immersive monumental multimedia installations suspended between public and private spheres, simulation and reality, documentary and fiction. He reshapes reality through archival materials, employing "Re-shooting" as an aesthetic strategy to create new works. He reexamines the past, the tabooed, misunderstood figures and events, often referencing Taiwan's history and society.

The Trio Hall merges all these stimuli with a kaleidoscope of references, as always in Su Hui-Yu's multifaceted artistic practice. Firstly, the symbology connected to the number three: “Three is the first number to which the meaning ‘all’ was given. It is The Triad, being the number of the whole as it contains the beginning, a middle and an end. The power of three is universal and is the tripartite nature of the world as heaven, earth, and waters. It is human as body, soul and spirit.”¹ Even God's attributes are three. For coincidence, three are also the RGB color model, which strongly marks the mass media era, whose symbol is also of universal significance: a triad or trinity, representing the unity of body, mind, and spirit.
