As Boundaries Recede, Space Begins to Appear

Form follows function remains one of the enduring principles in design discourse. It suggests that form should emerge from the context and intrinsic logic of use, shaping experiences that feel intuitive and unforced. Over time, minimalism has evolved beyond an aesthetic language into a way of interpreting everyday life. It continues to return to a persistent question: where does the boundary of “less is more” actually lie? For minimalism is never merely an act of reduction, nor a fixed visual grammar; at its core, it is an inquiry into the essence of things.

As an Austrian pioneer in furniture movement systems, GRASS has never limited its design thinking to the structural composition of drawers, nor to the smooth operation and durability of their hardware. Following the introduction of the world’s first one-piece steel drawer side at just 8 millimetres, Vionaro V8 emerges as an exercise in radical refinement—an attempt to distill design to its essential condition. In contrast to a literal reading of “form follows function,” it quietly extends the conversation toward a state where form approaches disappearance. Within this condition, storage is no longer understood as volume alone, but as the production of invisible space.

As the structural edge is reduced to a near-vanishing line, spatial possibilities begin to surface. Through an ultra-slim steel construction and a precise rectangular geometry, internal storage capacity is increased by up to 16% compared to conventional drawer systems. The entire structure is formed in monolithic, laser-welded steel—almost entirely free of plastic and fully recyclable—reflecting a commitment to material clarity and long-term responsibility. This structural reduction is balanced by performance: paired with the Dynapro concealed runner system, the drawer maintains stability under load while allowing a smooth, near-effortless motion that subtly alters the rhythm of daily use.

Through a language of deliberate restraint, Vionaro V8 withdraws the drawer from its usual role as a visible furniture element. Instead, it softens its presence within the architectural order of kitchens, bathrooms, and domestic interiors, allowing these environments to read as a continuous spatial field rather than a sequence of segmented volumes. What emerges is a form of evolved functionality—where structure remains present, yet no longer asserts itself. It becomes embedded, almost internalised, shaping experience from within. As Dieter Rams once remarked, “Good design is as little design as possible.” GRASS continues to work within this lineage, treating product development not as the pursuit of novelty, but as a slow clarification of what design already is. In this sense, Vionaro V8 is not a statement of the future, but a quiet refinement of how space, structure, and everyday life might continue to align.
