Hidden Within the Wall: Interpreting Contemporary Bathroom Spaces Through Natural Water Forms

➤ Antonio Citterio
When bathroom fittings are no longer regarded solely as functional elements, but instead become part of a broader architectural language, the way users perceive everyday rituals begins to shift. Bathrooms are thus redefined—from secondary, utilitarian spaces into key nodes that shape personal states of being and the rhythm of daily life. This reflects a broader observation from this year’s Milan Design Week: rather than privileging individual objects as standalone highlights, contemporary design increasingly prioritises the seamless experiential flow constructed through spatial storytelling.

AXOR, the bathroom design brand under the German Hansgrohe Group, embraces this evolving perspective through its core philosophy, “Escape the Ordinary.” With the launch of Incava and Archivio, the brand introduces two new collections that move beyond conventional frameworks of use, responding to different lifestyles and spatial scales while offering a deeper sense of relaxation and restoration.

➤ Incava
Encountering the water flow of Incava for the first time may evoke impressions of natural fountains or cascading streams. Rather than drawing attention to the fixture itself, the experience foregrounds the movement of water and the interplay of light across surfaces. Guided by architect Antonio Citterio’s rigorous standards for spatial aesthetics, the system integrates thermostatic controls, a hand shower, and storage niches into a single architectural composition that recedes almost entirely into the wall surface. The control panel projects only 11 millimetres from the wall, establishing an exceptionally restrained visual language. By eliminating exposed components, the collection enhances the spatial purity of the bathroom environment, allowing bathing to become a quieter and more inward experience.

Archivio, meanwhile, reconsiders what “classic” can mean within a contemporary context, while seeking to accommodate different generations of aesthetic sensibilities within the same space. The softened contours of its cross handles lend a more organic character to the mechanical act of turning the tap, while the sculptural lever handles refine operational precision through subtle adjustments to proportion and line. Rather than competing for visual attention, the collection allows tactile experience to quietly emerge through materiality, reflection, and detail. This understated sense of luxury enables the collection to integrate naturally into a wide range of architectural settings while retaining a lasting spatial presence over time.

Through decades of stylistic evolution, the brand has never simply pursued fashionable forms, but has consistently focused on strengthening the relationship between people and space. Recognising that every environment possesses its own distinct identity, the brand also offers the Signature customisation service, allowing users to move beyond standardised products and develop spaces aligned with their own personal aesthetic preferences. From personalised finishes and custom insignias to additional 3D textures created through advanced milling and laser technologies, even flexible adjustments in dimensions and proportions can be tailored to individual needs — enabling highly personalised bathroom environments to take shape.
