Can a single cabinet hold two identities? In everyday life, we are accustomed to the habitual gestures of opening a door to retrieve something and putting things away. In the opening and closing of a door, it becomes a steady spatial interface, separating what is within from what is without while shielding what lies beyond from view. Within the logic of interior spatial order, equipment, furniture, and hardware components likewise take their place according to the functions of everyday life. A clearly defined blueprint for everyday life gradually takes shape, connecting the habits and rhythms of our daily routines. Yet once a form is fixed, the possibilities for spatial change seem to become defined along with it. The question, then, is how the “interface” that defines a function might regain its fluidity—how something designed to delineate and contain might once again flow with everyday life. This, in turn, becomes a question of design.
A more efficient approach to using space need not be a choice between complete openness and enclosure; the two can exist as opposite sides of the same coin. Swiss company HAWA approaches this question through the Concepta III concealed door hardware system, allowing doors to pivot 90 degrees before sliding sideways into a cabinet or wall recess. Applied to kitchen cabinetry, the doors can be opened while cooking, bringing appliances and bottles of seasonings within easy reach; once the work is done, they can be drawn closed again, allowing the functions of the kitchen to recede from view. The system can also be configured according to different spatial scales, from half-height cabinets on kitchen islands and full-height wardrobes to walk-in dressing rooms. Combined with the Folding Concepta III, it can create a three-door solution without the need for a partition wall, forming a clean and elegant spatial plane.
Through its smooth, retractable mechanism, the cabinet can shift its presence in response to different situations of use. With guests around, the same cabinet can become a bar for mixing drinks and displaying collections; when one wishes for a moment of quiet solitude, it can recede into the background, leaving the space visually clear. A light touch on the panel is all it takes to open the door intuitively—a deliberate touch of elegance woven into everyday life. Even when pushed with one hand, the movement is almost effortless, gliding steadily and quietly along its track. It feels almost like drawing back the curtain on a stage where life takes the leading role, returning the freedom of interpretation to the user, and allowing the scenes of everyday life to shift more freely between appearance and retreat.
