Awakening Perception: Bathroom Spaces Are Crossing New Boundaries

The Salone del Mobile.Milano is often regarded as the annual red carpet of the global design industry. Beyond the latest creations unveiled by leading designers and brands, it is also a platform where experimental forms and emerging materials quietly hint at the future direction of domestic living and spatial design.

Among this year's highlights, Villeroy & Boch Group introduced its latest 3D-printed ceramic technology, breaking free from the formal limitations imposed by traditional molds. The process allows ceramics to display distinctive layered textures while enriching their tactile qualities. Produced entirely from recyclable ceramic waste, the technology also reduces the consumption of energy, molds, and raw materials, reflecting the industry's growing commitment to sustainability. On display was the conceptual Antao Earth collection, featuring the new Artisan Glaze stone-textured finish. By replacing the traditionally cool character of ceramics with surfaces reminiscent of natural stone, and incorporating earthy terracotta reds, sandstone beiges, and smoky greys, the collection introduces greater emotional depth and warmth to contemporary bathroom environments.

Beyond material and technological innovation, GROHE presented a new exploration of form and experience. Under the exhibition theme Aqua Sanctuary, the brand returned to the restorative qualities of water, creating an immersive aquatic experience through highly customized craftsmanship and the refined design language of GROHE SPA. At the center of the installation stood AquaTree, a 3D-printed metal shower concept inspired by biomorphic design. Drawing from the silhouette of a tree, the installation features two distinct water modes—Laminar Flow and Fountain Spray—transforming the act of bathing into a more immersive sensory experience and turning the bathroom into a contemplative space for reflection and relaxation.

At the same time, the long-standing pursuit of visual restraint and spatial invisibility appears to be evolving. Stronger architectural expressions, personalized materials, and sculptural geometries are no longer content with simply blending into their surroundings; instead, they actively shape the character of a space. A notable example is MONO, Falper's latest 2026 collection developed in collaboration with Foster + Partners. Employing Bézier curves to balance organic lines with rigorous proportions, the collection integrates bathroom furnishings into the broader architectural framework, transforming them from secondary functional elements into spatial features with both harmony and flexibility.

Similarly, Glass Design partnered with Tonino Lamborghini to introduce the futuristic AUREAS bathtub. Rejecting conventional soft curves, the design adopts a faceted geometric volume reminiscent of a cut diamond. Alongside it, the AQUARAMA freestanding basin, designed by Vincenzo Missanelli, features pronounced vertical fluting that lends the object the presence of a sculptural artwork, subtly transforming a functional area into an artistic focal point within everyday life.

In the post-pandemic era, as people spend more time at home, expectations of living spaces have expanded beyond comfort alone. The ability of a space to reflect individual identity and emotional character is increasingly expressed through diverse choices of materials, finishes, textures, and colors. For the special edition of its COYA collection, DORNBRACHT introduced a faucet inspired by the traditional Chinese "Ruyi Knot," symbolizing harmony and good fortune. Meanwhile, the Atelier program offers bespoke gemstone customization, incorporating the vibrant colors and natural patterns of precious stones into faucet handles to celebrate individuality and personal expression.

Glass Design's Lumina bathtub, crafted from the brand's signature VetroFreddo® material, offers a lighter and more ethereal bathing experience. Its translucent surface allows light and water to interact in unexpected ways, creating a new rhythm of spatial perception. Likewise, Falper's MAESTRO basin, made from hand-blown glass, invites users to observe the movement of water through warm amber and smoky-brown tones. Both pieces function not only as collectible works of craftsmanship but also as objects capable of bringing a sense of poetry into everyday rituals.

GROHE offered another perspective on material expression through its Allure Gravity collection, celebrating what might be described as "visible imperfection." Inspired by the philosophy of Japanese Kintsugi, the collection transforms traces of repair into defining visual features. Rather than pursuing either raw rusticity or flawless perfection, it embraces authenticity while elevating individuality and personal character through material expression.

From the new manufacturing vocabulary enabled by 3D printing, to the renewed dialogue between biomorphic design and nature, and the increasingly expressive role of materials and form, this year's exhibition revealed a broader shift in contemporary bathroom design. The boundaries of the bathroom continue to expand, while functional fixtures are gradually evolving into mediums capable of responding to personal identity, spatial atmosphere, and ways of living. As a result, future bathroom design is likely to place even greater emphasis on creating meaningful connections between people and their everyday experiences.
