Within the Square: A World of Aesthetics Shaped by Ceramic Surfaces

How do we read a surface? What remains when ceramic tiles are no longer judged by texture, pattern, or technical performance alone? Our gaze inevitably lingers longer. Within the measured proportions of each cut, one might discern the enduring harmony of ancient Roman architecture, or the quiet lyricism of Botticelli’s paintings. For ABK, Italian ceramics are conceived as canvases for contemporary space—surfaces that carry the traces of history alongside the spark of fashion and design, absorbing the depth of material culture and the breadth of creative expression before transforming them into an architectural language of their own.

Humanity’s awareness of beauty begins with conscious observation. In Italy, that pursuit can be traced back to the Renaissance, where an enduring aesthetic sensibility became woven into everyday life. Like the precise extraction of an espresso, proportion is treated with uncompromising care. From the framing of a window and the silhouette of a dining chair to the typography on a linen napkin—or even the ceramic surface receding quietly into the background—art is never far from view. It is within this cultural landscape that cross-disciplinary collaboration has naturally become ABK’s gateway to exploring materiality and spatial aesthetics.
Its collaboration with Paola Navone unfolds as a series of bold and deeply intuitive material experiments. Memories gathered through travel, tactile craftsmanship and cultural encounters are translated into ceramic surfaces rich with vitality—compositions that write poetry through colour and texture, lending spaces a more expressive character and emotional resonance. Equally significant is ABK’s long-standing partnership with Versace Ceramics as its exclusive global manufacturing partner. More than a demonstration of technical mastery, the collaboration reinterprets the maison’s richly ornamental visual language within contemporary architecture and interior design, moving beyond the reproduction of iconic motifs to reveal the refined craftsmanship of Italian luxury aesthetics.

Continuously challenging the boundaries of aesthetic experience, Moooi marks another important chapter in the expansion of ABK’s design landscape. Through imaginative, theatrical mythological birds, the collaboration imagines the nest as a contemporary symbol of warmth and belonging. Its instinct to defy convention and pursue new creative possibilities resonates closely with ABK’s own philosophy. Rendered through remarkably lifelike detailing and nuanced natural palettes, ceramic surfaces transcend their functional role, becoming artistic expressions elevated from everyday life. As daylight moves across them, each glance cast upon the space becomes an entirely new experience.
