The design of Porta Volta draws inspiration from the arches found in traditional Italian architecture. Arches, long considered a symbol of transition and guidance, serve as iconic elements at building entrances, imbued with deep historical and spatial significance. Herzog & de Meuron reinterpreted this symbol, transforming it into a design language for modern furniture. The elegant curves strike a balance between solidity and fluidity, making Porta Volta a bridge between tradition and modernity, bringing a poetic sense of harmony to any space.

Porta Volta’s design is not only visually captivating but also demonstrates a delicate balance between structure and comfort. The backrest, reminiscent of an arch, encircles the U-shaped seat, extending outward and curving forward to form the armrests. Three interwoven U-shaped elements create a supportive structure, connecting the backrest to the lower frame and legs with stability. Slightly outward-tilted legs and backrest provide a grounded yet graceful presence, enhancing both support and comfort.
