From Lighting to Spatial Narratives, Where Light Shapes Everyday Life
Founded in 1991, SEEDDESIGN has long established itself as one of Taiwan’s leading original lighting design brands. Making its debut at Experience Life this year, the brand presents Guided by Light, an exhibition tracing three decades of original craftsmanship through newly launched designs and intelligent lighting technology. For founder and design director Meiric Chen, light extends far beyond illumination. It shapes the rhythm of everyday life, defines spatial atmosphere and quietly mediates the relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit.
From Icons to New Works: Three Decades of Design
Moving through the exhibition, visitors encounter a chronological narrative of SEEDDESIGN’s evolution. Award-winning pieces recognised by the iF Design Award, Red Dot Design Award, Golden Pin Design Award and German Design Award reveal a design language rooted in mechanical ingenuity, where intricate engineering is consistently concealed beneath restrained forms. Among them is Mr. DJ, inspired by the tactile ritual of vinyl turntables, allowing users to dim the light through the simple act of rotating its disc while exposing the brass gear mechanism beneath a transparent base. Tram reimagines early streetcars through an electrified brass rail system that eliminates visible wiring, enabling the light source to be repositioned freely along the track and recalling the nostalgic image of trams travelling across open landscapes.
Named after the idea of meeting every day, WÚ transforms the conventional wall light into a refined linear form. Its dual-axis mechanism allows the fixture to fold neatly against the wall or extend effortlessly in multiple directions, creating a fluid relationship between light and space. The latest addition to the collection, Cén, evokes miniature glass mountains suspended in the air. Gradient sandblasted glass softens the emitted light into a delicate haze, while vibrant metal finishes introduce a subtle sense of rhythm through material contrast. Elsewhere, experimental lighting pieces employing specially chromed bulbs diffuse glare into poetic projections that resemble drifting snowflakes or expanding ripples, transforming plain white walls into layered surfaces animated by light.
SEEDLab: light as a spatial narrative
Drawing on decades of experience, SEEDDESIGN understands that lighting design begins long before selecting a fixture. It starts with how people inhabit a space, how routines unfold throughout the day and how atmosphere shapes daily life. This thinking led to SEEDLab, a bespoke service offering flexible canopy solutions, multi-pendant configurations and custom combinations of shades, glare shields and cable finishes to suit individual interiors. The exhibition also incorporates the Casambi Bluetooth lighting control system, allowing visitors to adjust lighting scenes intuitively via mobile devices and experience how subtle variations in light can transform the ambience of a space.
