Drowsy

"Far away, at the edge of an endless plain, a faint melody drifts through the gaps in the pendulum’s ticking. Everyone on board dreams gentle dreams." This evocative scene from Kenji Miyazawa’s Night on the Galactic Railroad captures the boundlessness of dreams, where journeys begin with openness. Similarly, the home named “Drowsy” embraces this philosophy, designed as a haven of vastness and tranquility.

Dreams unfold when boundaries are redefined. Initially, the homeowner, a physician, envisioned converting the original three-bedroom layout into a private study for quiet reflection and personal growth. However, with guidance from BH Interior Design, this solitary space was transformed into an open reading area, fostering a seamless flow between living and learning.
The partition beside the living room was removed, replaced by functional furnishings while a single structural beam subtly defined the transition between spaces. The kitchen cabinetry was relocated, allowing sunlight to stream through floor-to-ceiling windows, creating an open, light-filled layout. The TV wall extends toward the ceiling with a graceful curve, framed by indirect lighting, naturally drawing the eye toward the elongated balcony and enhancing the sense of visual continuity.

A palette of warm, light tones—combined with marble textures, mineral finishes, and natural wood—grounds the space with a calming warmth. Entering the home feels like stepping into an oasis, where the stresses of daily life fade away, replaced by peace and serenity.
The home’s understated elegance lies in its subtle details. A recessed ceiling highlights the interplay of light and shadow on textured walls, while triangular cut lines on the TV wall create depth and movement. Beside the floor-to-ceiling bookcase, glass shelves and extended cabinet legs introduce lightness and breathability. In the primary bedroom, a thoughtfully designed ceiling pairs with a low-profile headboard to enhance the sense of openness and add a touch of quiet sophistication.

What sets this home apart is the creative transformation of overlooked spaces into purposeful areas. A previously unused nook now serves as a dedicated coffee station, while an irregular corner in the primary bedroom has been cleverly converted into a functional walk-in closet. These thoughtful adaptations extend the home’s dreamlike quality, making it both imaginative and deeply personal.
The “Drowsy” home offers not just a retreat for the homeowner but also a welcoming space for guests, with a thoughtfully retained guestroom and an expanded dining area. In this serene and open environment, every visitor is invited to step into a tranquil, dreamlike world.
