Studio  |  Earthrise Studio

A former shoe factory in London, England, originally abandoned in 1924, has been renovated by Studio McW Architects, and along with the owner's eco-friendly philosophy, has been transformed into a multimedia studio to welcome the world.

The owners are a couple who advocate environmental protection and nature issues through photography, and this renovation of an old shoe factory is a symbol of their brand. Therefore, "sustainability" and "reuse" are the main themes of this project. The owner did not want to build a brand new building, but wanted to integrate his own ideas and add functions to the existing building to reduce the damage to the environment, so he chose to renovate the old shoe factory. In line with the owner's concept, the firm used many natural materials such as wood, oak, concrete and greenery to create the studio.
This project not only focuses on the studio, but also emphasizes the living space of the owner. In order to satisfy the homeowner's vision that home and studio could be linked together, the concept of "flexibility" was repeated in this space. During the renovation process, the firm broke up the original concrete pillars and small partitions of the old shoe factory, allowing everything to be divided by soft furnishings, blurring the boundaries between the areas for the owner's flexible use. The kitchen island and the dining table can be used for parties, but with the table tucked away, it becomes a studio office area again. When there are guests, the computer and equipment on the dining table can be stored in the cabinet at the back, and it instantly becomes a relaxing area for tea and conversation.

The shortcomings and features of the old shoe factory have been improved and utilized by Studio McW Architects. The east-west studio is bathed in natural light in the morning and in the evening. For this reason, the two walls that are exposed to the sun were chosen to retain their original concrete walls, but with a special coating to extend their life. The other two walls, which do not receive natural light, were painted in beige to continue the color continuity of the studio and to brighten the overall light. The office also used large steel windows, trusses, exposed concrete beams, and a double-pitched roof with overhead glass to bring in light while creating a special style.
Today, this studio, Earthrise Studio, is not only the home, social space and office area of the owners, but has also become part of their brand identity.

As the owner says, "Studio McW Architects has created the spirit of this studio, not only by using natural elements and creating a flexible space that allows the function of each place to change at any time, but also by making it an integral part of our life and work". Studio McW not only preserves the historical elements in the space, but also creates more possibilities by blurring the lines.
