Home, Art Gallery

If one listens to Degree Design's Tseng Chih Hao talk about his first home, it's easy to perceive from his words that he has a clear vision of the home contours. He came to Taipei from Chungli, Taoyuan to study in high school and started his journey by renting a house. After years of experience, he has developed a clear idea of where and what type of space he wanted to buy as his own abode in the future. The 4.3m high residential space with a small outdoor terrace perfectly fits the needs. Through his design expertise, he has transformed the space to create the first home he had always wished for.

The home is designed with full freedom and experimental spirit, and the concepts, methods and materials that could not be implemented in the past are realized in this project. Tseng Chih Hao has turned his home into a showpiece. With white as the background, he boldly combined paint, island wood flooring, tile, iron and wood veneer to enhance the brightness of the space through the fusion of simple colors and design, demonstrating the image and style of degree design. The lightness of the sunlight filtering through the window screen is his favorite view. He aspired to create a modern and comfortable atmosphere like an art museum, so that the accumulated fatigue of the whole day can be dissipated with the pure and open space, and the leisure time can be spent relaxing and lazing in the rainy afternoons. This kind of spontaneity and freedom is the sense of life he is seeking to pursue.
“I've had a dream since I was a kid that I would have a spinning staircase in my house.” Tseng Chih Hao shyly smiles and shares how attractive the ritual of going down the spiral staircase was to him. On the other hand, he rationalized that the spiral staircase is more space-saving than the inclined staircase in a small space. The original inclined staircase combined with the TV wall brought a sense of oppression to the space. After the design renovation, the vertical rotating staircase is simple and elegant, and moved to the side of the sofa, releasing the height of the ceiling to open up the view of the room, so that the bright sunlight can come in with the large floor-to-ceiling window view and brighten the space. The ceiling/floor that will be passed by the upstairs is slightly curved to make the movement smoother and more comfortable. When the home is conceived as a "museum", every single piece of furniture in the room is transformed into art by the designer's hands. The deep pine and cypress ink marble center island, the carved purple coffee table and side table draw out the simplicity of the square, while the rotating ladder lingers between the top and bottom with a rounded touch. The geometric elements are used to build life on the beauty in the modern and simple frame volume.

To enlarge the space, the same white color was used for the ceiling, floor and walls. Mirrors were added at the entrance and the upstairs dressing room to reflect the reality. The flooring is made of cool white Mortex with relatively warm wood veneer, as in the case of the storage cabinets, the wooden flooring on the second floor, and the asymmetrical wooden end view above the bed, to soften the coldness and enhance the natural texture of the space. At the same time, designer lighting is used to decorate the space, with light GUBI white chandeliers in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows to avoid obscuring the view. The Flos red chandelier is used above the bed to echo the carved purple stone, as if the contemporary design is a collection of the house's art museum, and every corner of the space is an end view. The apartment where two people live together, the two bicycles hanging on the wall, the figures making siphon coffee and breakfast in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, and the gesture of going downstairs around the spiraling staircase are all behavioral art flowing in the daily life, which are collected in this pure white museum house.
