OVOID
Suspended beneath the Wadi Hanifah Bridge like a glowing, egg-shaped lantern, this installation art piece is located in the Diriyah district, northwest of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. The bridge, which spans the dry valley plain, serves not only as a critical transportation link connecting towns on either side of the valley but also as a significant cultural landmark. Visitors are drawn to this site to enjoy panoramic views of the ecological landscape and riverbed of Wadi Hanifah, making it a popular destination for international travelers.
As night falls, the steady flow of vehicles crossing the Wadi Hanifah Bridge lights up the scene with flickering headlights, seemingly in conversation with the “Ovoid” installation below. The softly glowing, bright red ovoid creates a lively contrast against the tranquil surroundings. Created by Spanish artist SpY, this piece debuted at the fourth edition of the grand Noor Riyadh light art festival. It embodies SpY's distinctive artistic language, using installation as a medium to engage in a conceptual and spatial dialogue with its environment, evoking profound resonance with viewers.
Standing 35 meters tall, the illuminated red ovoid casts a striking reflection on the still waters of the Wadi Hanifah valley at night, doubling its visual scale and creating an even more imposing presence. Its interaction with the surrounding ecosystem generates dynamic light and shadow effects that are fleeting yet mesmerizing. Not only does the installation stand out for its originality, but it also employs powerful visual impact to evoke an emotional and sensory connection in its audience. SpY masterfully integrates his work into the environment, delivering a profound artistic experience. Through this installation, he challenges the boundaries of urban and public art, creating works not only on city streets but also showcased in internationally renowned museums and galleries. These works leave a lasting impression by expanding the scope of artistic interaction and influence.
The Ovoid’s monumental form captivates viewers as they approach, drawing them into an immersive dialogue between scale and space. As they move around the piece, their shifting perspectives invite them to reassess their sense of place and position within the environment. The ovoid’s red glow reflects softly on the water, enhancing the interplay of light, space, and perception. This deepens the viewer's engagement with the artwork and its surroundings, while its vivid color and monumental scale inject new vitality into the urban landscape.
