Westerpunt
➤ Images by ©studio MOTO

Westerpunt, an artistic landscape structure resembling a pentagon emerging from the coastal embankment, blends almost seamlessly with the surrounding environment. Its unique and characterful design intrigues onlookers, sparking curiosity. This landmark, located in the western coastal town of De Panne, Belgium, was commissioned by the Municipality of De Panne and the Province of West Flanders and designed by Studio MOTO. It serves as a distinct intersection between land and sea and symbolizes the connection at the border between Belgium and France.

The natural reserves and endless coastal dunes of De Panne create a charming and unique landscape. The changing tides, birds foraging along the receding shorelines, wind-sculpted dunes, and the people strolling along the promenade collectively form a serene and expansive ecological panorama. Studio MOTO drew inspiration from these elements, using natural ecological colors as the outer layer of Westerpunt. The structure’s concrete form consists of a series of linear staircases connected at 108-degree angles, creating a pentagonal ring. This striking cantilevered design not only withstands the unpredictable coastal weather but also harmoniously integrates with the surrounding environment.

As visitors stroll along the promenade, they can naturally transition onto the staircases of the viewing platform. Ascending the steps, they can pause at each platform to enjoy different scenic perspectives, before continuing along the path, eventually crossing soft dunes to reach the expansive and inviting beach. At high tide, the ocean engages dynamically with the structure, as waves gently submerge the sculptural ring of Westerpunt, lapping against its ends. The circular staircases offer a tactile experience, connecting different planes of the environment, with the view constantly evolving as nature changes.

Studio MOTO envisioned Westerpunt as a dialogue between static existence and dynamic interaction. Despite its modest scale, the structure communicates with people and the environment through its unique design language. The inner contour of the structure acts like a lens, focusing on various movements and capturing the beauty within the circular frame. This suggests that the viewing platform maintains an ongoing interaction with its surroundings in every aspect. Even though it is located in De Panne, visitors from the nearby city of Dunkirk can experience different views through its reverse-facing lens. Westerpunt stands quietly and independently, respecting its environment. In addition to being a popular public observation point, it narrates the interaction between people and nature and creates a perfect connection at the border between Belgium and France.
