White & Lights

Home

A drive along a tree-lined road toward the suburbs took people to a serene, pure white residence that offers unobstructed view of the lush green countryside, with an intoxicating interplay of light and shadow. Life in this house truly offers a sense of freedom and immersion in an open scenery. This project – the second commission that[W1]  10mm Design received to design a house for the owner – was handled by Hui-Chen Hung and Lin-Ya Huang, two designers that have aptly combined interior and exterior to create a wonderful living space, casual and free throughout the day.

The family members involve a couple and their newborn baby. And the couple told the designers with disarming frankness that they preferred an informal residence, even jokingly said that they could do without doors, with the hope of enjoying an open space without restriction whatsoever. According to designer Hui-Chen Hung, since the living and dining rooms are the core areas where the family spend most of the time, this project, carried out without restrictions in terms of the layout, features a living room and a dining room that incorporate a kitchen and an entrance to create a huge public space with a surrounding, soothing view of nature. Moreover, without separate sections, the furniture layout is arranged with single chairs as vital elements that can be moved around in such a free and casual atmosphere by the occupants to enjoy the light. The Nordic chairs, minimalist in form, could serve as a reading and working place, while oriental antique chairs are placed by the windows as fixtures – a fascinating mix of old and new as the main focus of the project. In short, this minimalist, modern residence features a new space set off by antique pieces of furniture adding a sense of depth to the space.
The indoor space, about 41.8 square meters, is made up of two units that combine to offer a large, unfolding view. A lot of effort has gone into making this residence a unique urban space where different shades of white are visible – simple yet rich in details – to lend the bright interior a delightful sense of warmness. A nice choice of shades and materials presents different levels of whiteness. Specifically, white sand is applied to the walls to create the frames, the single chairs are upholstered in cream leather, and the kitchen utensils are mainly in white, supplemented with pieces of oak wood, with white sand oozing a rustic charm. The unique brush marks – results of the plasterers’ ingenuity – blend with the warm, cream leather upholstery and oak pieces of furniture, creating a neat and comfortable living space that, in the natural light, gives the occupants a sense of tenderness and elegance upon their entry into the house.
