Yu Residence

A home is a space defined by life, naturally endowed with the flexibility to adapt as life evolves. The renovation of the Yu family's residence, home to a family of three, retains the emotional connection to cherished experiences while introducing a rational approach to refining the present and planning for the future. The adjustments reflect a comprehensive understanding of various living scenarios, giving the home a fresh outlook to embrace the future.

The L-shaped plot and the original beam structure limited the continuity of the public areas and ceiling height. By incorporating a diagonal arrangement from the northeast to the southwest, fragmented spaces were reorganized, creating a smooth flow through the living areas and extending the visual continuity. Four functional zones were designed with both independence and connectivity. Three three-quarter round wooden posts positioned at the turning points of the walls soften the angular transitions of the steps while introducing a rhythmic sequence along the exterior walls.

Upon entering the hallway, part of the beam structure is deliberately exposed, finished with a coating that mimics a cement-like texture. This contrast in ceiling height, materials, and color, combined with thoughtfully selected lighting fixtures, creates an interplay between indoor and outdoor space. The wooden posts and stepped configuration evoke the sensation of walking beneath a sheltered veranda as one moves through the passage.

If the energy of the passage is fluid, the sleeping quarters form the core of comfort. The studio and AV room are placed diagonally opposite the master bedroom, clearly separating two distinct functions. When the door to the master bedroom is open, it unveils another light-filled corridor that connects directly to the kitchen. The master bathroom's external washbasin connects to a vanity, creating a semi-open space that maximizes natural light and spaciousness, perfectly accommodating the couple’s routines. The child’s room is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for future adjustments as the child grows, with thoughtful provisions for storage and outlets.

Rational logic is the foundation of space design, and by considering the specific purpose and needs of each case, professionals are able to infuse artistic value into the space. The most important aspect of residential design is its closeness to the occupants, avoiding showy techniques or excessive material layering. Instead, it subtly enhances the quality of life. The simplicity, naturalness, and elegance of the Yu residence, with every detail carefully executed, is a testament to the accumulation and transformation of design experience and expertise.
