Embracing the Self in Harmony with Nature: A Healing Experience — Mineless

The name “Mineless” was coined by architect Divooe Zein. Once developed because of its mineral wealth, the site now embarks on a new chapter defined by its absence of a mine. The English name “Mineless” is both direct and evocative—symbolizing a place where one can let go of the self and embrace an authentic communion with the wild. Carrying forward the experimental healing legacy of Divooe Zein Architects’ project at Wa Shuangxi, Fan-Yu Lin—formerly of the Shao Shao Primal Sensing Lab—was recommended by Divooe Zein and has since become the Chief Operating Officer of Mineless. Following Fan-Yu Lin’s lead, after a thorough exploration of the site, we gathered in the dining area on the first floor of the third building. Bathed in ever-changing sunlight filtered through shifting tree shadows, we savored handcrafted botanical treats—soymilk yogurt, Bi Luo Chun tea-infused rice, dried figs, and more—a veritable feast for the senses. The healing experience, as they say, must be felt firsthand; its simple beauty is destined to leave a lasting imprint on the heart.

Once home to the Zhongyi Coal Mine, this site was eventually acquired by the owner’s father. By examining old geothermal exploration records and transaction files, he retraced the contemplative process behind the land purchase. Collaborating with cultural historians, he uncovered the mine’s rich heritage and pondered how to repurpose the space. After visiting several projects by Divooe Zein Architects, the owner was captivated by architect Divooe Zein’s unique vision. In a process that intertwined an exploration of the site's history with innovative spatial design, the concept of a multifaceted healing environment was born.

Infinite Exploration Across Three Buildings

Mineless consists of three structures, each carefully preserved to retain the raw vitality of the original site. Adhering to Divooe Zein Architects’ philosophy, the design set aside preconceived notions to truly listen to the needs of both the owner and the environment, revealing the space’s inherent value. Entering the site is like stepping into a labyrinth, where the buildings interconnect in diverse, unobtrusive ways. In the first building, the absence of internal staircases channels guests directly into a ground-floor reception area. Here, an iron shelving system forms a counter that elegantly blurs the boundary between interior and exterior. The timeworn walls, displaying both old and new marks, remain unadorned, and even the original furnace structures on the floor are left intact. Furniture within the space is arranged for flexibility, and the simple, fixed lighting and wiring preserve the area’s authentic character. Notably, on the wall facing the mountainside, the original red-brick structure is supported internally by timber sleepers combined with eco-friendly water-management techniques. In heavy rains, water seeps through the mountain wall into the interior and is guided out via indoor gutters—echoing the historical dialogue between mine architecture and nature, and lending rainy days a distinct charm.

Stepping from one building’s entrance to the outdoor area of another, visitors experience a striking contrast between bright natural light and deep shadows. The second building retains much of its original historical character: its walls still display remnants such as employee guidelines and a headlamp-testing machine, and a sunken space on the second floor—believed to have once housed a large winch critical for moving mine carts—is meticulously preserved. This unique area now serves as a creative studio for local artists. Here, iron shuttered windows recall the awe the architectural team felt witnessing the dynamic interplay between ancient trees and the building—especially as the enclosing garden bursts with climbing vines, with the windows fully opening to embrace nature.

In keeping with the principle of preserving the site's original state, only a few new elements have been introduced. Two cast-iron volumes have been added: one forms an outdoor meditation room on the roof of the second building, and the other creates a tea room on the second floor of the third building. While the overall design continuously invites visitors to gaze outward, the enclosed atmosphere of these rooms also encourages introspection. The tea room, with its distinctive arched cast-iron structure that naturally gathers sound, has hosted tea tastings, gong bowl meditations, fragrance workshops, and more. The circulation from the first to the third building clearly guides visitors from the raw, untamed origins to a comfortable, modern space, where after exploring they can relax and enjoy seasonal cuisine. This transition echoes the tradition of miners who, after a long day’s work, would cleanse themselves in the bathhouse of the third building. The third building’s most striking feature is its expansive rooftop terrace—offering an unobstructed view of verdant mountains and rugged cliffs, it provides a soul-stirring panorama that seems to dissolve everyday worries like a wisp of smoke.

A Tapestry of Enduring Stories

The name “Mineless” was coined by architect Divooe Zein. Once developed because of its mineral wealth, the site now embarks on a new journey defined by the absence of a mine. The name “Mineless” is both straightforward and evocative, suggesting a place to shed the self and embrace an intimate communion with nature. Building on the experimental healing approach from Divooe Zein Architects’ project in Wa Shuangxi, Fan-Yu Lin—formerly of the Shao Shao Primal Sensing Lab—was recommended by Divooe Zein and has since become the Chief Operating Officer of Mineless. Following Fan-Yu Lin’s lead, after an extensive exploration of the site, we gathered in the dining area on the first floor of the third building. Bathed in sunlight that danced with shifting tree shadows, we savored handcrafted botanical treats—soymilk yogurt, Bi Luo Chun tea-infused rice, dried figs, and more—a sensory feast that embodies the healing experience, leaving a lasting impression on the heart.

In 2023, Mineless celebrated its grand opening with an inaugural exhibition in collaboration with aromatherapy brand Kenyuan, design studio Cao Zitou, and Finnish artist Kustaa Saksi. This event not only commemorated Kenyuan’s 25th anniversary but also marked the debut of Mineless as a vibrant healing hub. Throughout the exhibition, artists discovered innovative ways to engage with every corner of the space, and the healing ambiance resonated deeply with visitors. From a modest turnout during early promotions to nearly a thousand visitors in one day, the overwhelming response underscored the growing public interest in holistic well-being. Acknowledging operational challenges, the Mineless team made thoughtful adjustments. “Our vision is for this to be a healing space—a place where the body and spirit can be restored by the energy of the site,” explained Fan-Yu Lin with a smile. Although the concept remains somewhat abstract, the aspiration to establish Mineless as Taiwan’s signature healing brand is clear. Since its launch, a series of dynamic events have continued to blossom within the space, as Mineless’s raw, untamed beauty writes new chapters in its history—layering the mine ruins with a rich depth of time.
