What if Nomadism is a Lifestyle Choice?

Old Ou, who wanders around Taiwan in a Volkswagen T3, was not initially interested in camping. First, because of the humid and hot weather in Taiwan, along with the nuisance of mosquitoes and bugs. Second, outdoor activities in Taiwan were not as prevalent as abroad, and the camping sites and facilities were not suitable for camper vans. It wasn't until he had his first camping experience in Europe that his impression of camping was completely overturned. What's special in Europe is that tents are rarely seen in campsites, as camper vans are very common, and the planning of campsites and policies are also quite comprehensive. In Europe, the warm sun shines on the verdant mountains and fields, a gentle breeze blows through the treetops, and the play of light and shadow in the woods brings a comfortable and pleasant climate, making camping an enjoyable activity at all times.

Since then, Old Ou has begun to drive his vehicle from the mountain ridges to the continuous hundred-mile coastline, collecting the soil moisture on the island, the valleys draped in continuous monsoon rains and covered with white snow, piecing together his everyday life. The camper van carries not just the familiar bedding, nor is it just a stable dwelling. With each drive, it has come to represent something deeper for Old Ou—it has become a home.

What do you think "home" is?

"Being with my partner, home is wherever we are together, and the camper van that allows us to wander with my partner is my second home."

A Simply Crafted, Ready-to-Go Home

Old Ou is a photographer, and his lens captures a unique aesthetic taste. The initial choice of the T3 was for its boxy shape paired with classic round lights, and its ivory color, which shows a rugged yet elegant retro charm. Moreover, many people abroad use the T3 as a base for customizing camper vans. "Compared to one with ready-made equipment, I prefer to create something unique with my own hands.

He has a fondness for the warmth and texture of old wood, and insisted on using it for the entire interior of the van. Initially lacking experience in woodworking, Old Ou shares that he used his garage as a practice ground to improve his skills. After dismantling the vehicle's body, he was then able to skillfully overcome every curved corner inside the van.

Life Starting from a "Vehicle"

The initial design plan was to find an existing template, set up a large framework, and then make modifications and extensions. At first, he wanted to fit everything into this mobile space: a sleeping system, cooking sink, storage space, all to be packed and taken along. However, the small scale of the vehicle's interior space meant that each function had to fit snugly within the others, with demanding requirements for the flow of movement, and everything had to be configured just right for smooth use. Templates of others' spaces might not suit one's own lifestyle. After several camping trips, Old Ou undertook a second modification of the initially planned space.

The refrigerator, located next to the vehicle door with its opening facing inward, opposite the sink by the window, limited convenience. Later, the refrigerator was removed and replaced with two-tier drawers under a seat bench, and by extending the cooking operations outside with a dual-burner stove, he greatly increased flexibility of use. The original sink required clean water to be poured into a tank and dirty water to be subsequently removed from the vehicle for disposal, which was troublesome. Later, he relocated the water tank under the vehicle and extended the water line outside, solving the needs for cleaning. Beside the bed, he installed multiple rattan-doored storage cabinets to unify the storage of miscellaneous items. With just a suitcase of personal belongings, one can drive off and start a camping life.

Waking Up to Different Sceneries, Embracing a Different Life

With millions of choices for living and traveling, why choose to live in a vehicle? Vehicle living, a middle ground between staying in a hotel and the freedom of camping, offers a comfortable space equipped for living while also allowing one to enjoy the liberating feeling of recreation. On the long roads, if you merely speed by, you'll miss much of the local charm. Only by slowing down and stopping can one truly sense the life around, a philosophy that has subtly permeated Old Ou's way of living.

The conversion of the sink into a small table by the window has now become Old Ou’s favorite spot inside the vehicle. Every day, opening the window reveals a new landscape and a new mood. Old Ou, currently touring Italy in his camper van, shares with passion that he is set to immigrate to Japan at the end of the year. Living nomadically in a camper van abroad, he experiences the varied terrains and cultures that each place offers. If nomadism is a lifestyle choice, then the definition of home is without confines.
