After three years of meticulous construction, the Bat Trang Ceramic Community House commenced its operations in 2021. This architectural marvel serves as a poignant testament to the rich heritage of the village, embodying a multifaceted purpose that includes showcasing the masterpieces of artisans, narrating the village's storied history, and offering insights into the diverse materials and techniques employed in the art of pottery-making. Bolstered by a substantial investment of 150 billion VND, this project is a pivotal component of "The Center for Quintessence of the Vietnamese Craft Village," a visionary initiative dedicated to advancing craft villages and preserve the venerable traditions of a pottery craft spanning more than 500 years.
Bat Trang
Situated strategically at the village's entrance, adjacent to the Bac Hung Hai canal that seamlessly connects to the Red River, the Bat Trang Ceramic Community House assumes a pivotal role in village planning. Its architectural design meticulously regulates construction density and height, fostering harmonious proportions and panoramic vistas. The structure contributes significantly to enhancing the canal landscape while reviving the vibrant ambiance of the ancient pottery market that once animated its surroundings.
This five-storeys multi-functional complex takes inspiration from the artistry of ceramic production, with its architectural form mirroring the intricate interplay of seven pottery turntables. These turntables evoke the image of a skilled artisan molding clay, producing a visually captivating result where concrete frames gracefully fold into stepped ceramics display shelves. This distinctive design not only captivates the observer but also optimizes the functionality of the space.
The ground floor features an open area, defined by the seven interlocking domes, providing a versatile space for public events. Skylights strategically positioned atop the structure facilitate natural daylighting, creating an environment where hot air efficiently rises, promoting cooling throughout the space.
In a deliberate nod to the rustic and idyllic essence of the pottery village, the exterior of the building predominantly showcases the reddish-brown hue characteristic of rough ceramics. This visual theme is achieved through the use of fiber-reinforced concrete, a lightweight material conducive to upward expansion and easily manageable by local builders. Further integrating the essence of Bat Trang, the building incorporates earthen bricks, mosaic ceramics, and pottery tiles, emphasizing a commitment to utilizing materials intrinsic to the craft village.
