Casa of Sloping Roof

How to Find Infinite Freedom Within Finite Space?

Inspired by fragments of thought from Le Corbusier, Casa of Sloping Roof in Huizhou, China, is a duplex penthouse defined by its striking pitched roof. The architects at BDSD Boundless Design extended the ceiling into a geometric roof form, taking advantage of the generous vertical height. This structural gesture introduces subtle visual tension, evoking the image of a bird resting beneath the eaves at dusk, quietly safeguarding the family’s daily rhythms and intimate rituals.

The sloping roof is more than a sculptural statement; it is the principal device for shaping both structure and atmosphere. Its angular geometry admits daylight from above and strengthens natural ventilation, ensuring that every corner of the residence is bathed in shifting light. The triangular form of the upper level not only enhances the perceived height of the interior but also enriches the minimalist setting with artistic depth and dynamic visual interest.

A staircase linking the entrance to the loft level anchors the spatial composition, expanding the home’s vertical dimension. Its ascending path imbues the residence with a natural orientation toward light, as illumination shifts with each turn and landing, intensifying the sense of spatial layering. The double-height living and lounge area unfolds around this circulation core. Concealed doors and integrated storage walls maintain privacy, while the tapering space beneath the sloping roof is transformed into a quiet reading alcove. The design boldly proposes to “live as if in a gallery.” Expanses of blank wall surfaces and carefully proportioned voids establish an atmosphere of restraint, while a curated selection of understated furnishings and finishes foregrounds the philosophy of “less is more.”

Ultimately, the project fulfills the client’s vision of a home that is free, open, sunlit, and conducive to family interaction. The architecture orbits around the rhythms of daily inhabitation rather than submitting to formalism. This quiet fluidity—an unspoken freedom of movement across thresholds and dimensions—gives the residence its sense of ease, offering both physical comfort and emotional restoration.
