Sustainable strategies were at the forefront of ambition, with the scheme reusing much of the original fabric including stone walls, roof tiling and the gnarled, unsawn timber roof skeleton. Although many elements were seen to be ‘beyond redemption’, a view was taken on the original barn roof structure, that with thoughtful timber engineering and layering new components, a new roof could be formed from the skeleton of the former. A visual layering that drawing became a key visual driver and encapsulation of the philosophy behind the project overall.

The description of old and new in this project comes from a compositional or sculptural approach. The older structure of the roof, more twisted, branch like members were counterpointed to regularised straight, modern lumber. The interchange between structure, tone and texture creates a patchwork, an interesting tapestry which betrays the different temporal incarnations of the building - in effect a palimpsest. The mending, in one sense, the sewing of old and new, delivers a richness and extended narrative fundamental to successful adaptation.
