HOUSE 1616

HOUSE 1616, located within Barcelona's dense urban grid, is a terraced residence transformed by HARQUITECTES into a symphony of light, space, and modern living. To harmonize with the adjacent façades of the row houses, the architects chose a simple red brick design, seamlessly integrating it with preserved original materials. This understated approach allows the façade to quietly embody a narrative of continuity, bridging history and contemporary design.

The narrow three-story layout is meticulously crafted to align with the rhythms and needs of its inhabitants. At the core of the home, a vertical staircase positioned near the entrance acts as a bright, central spine, linking all floors while bringing in abundant daylight. Strategically located to maintain privacy, the staircase also serves as an acoustic buffer, shielding the interiors from street noise. At the rear, a garden connects the house to the outdoors, functioning as a terrace that encourages natural ventilation and enhances the home's seamless relationship with nature.
Innovative structural design lies at the heart of HOUSE 1616. Conventional load-bearing walls are replaced with a grid of cross-shaped brick pillars that redefine both the structure and the spatial identity. These pillars provide essential support while introducing a sculptural rhythm to the interior. Horizontal slabs rest lightly on slender beams, distributing weight evenly across the grid and achieving a balance of stability and lightness. The result is a dynamic interplay of structure and light: as the sun moves throughout the day, intricate shadows dance across walls and floors, transforming the space. By evening, these shifting patterns imbue the pillars with a sculptural quality, turning them into a focal point of spatial poetry.
The ground floor is envisioned as the vibrant social hub of the home. This open-plan space flows effortlessly into the garden, where life meets nature in its purest form. Morning light filters through leaves, while cool evening breezes sweep across the terrace, infusing the home with a sense of calm. The middle floor is dedicated to the children, combining play, rest, and study areas into a space that fosters both creativity and focus. The top floor, reserved for the parents, is a sanctuary of tranquility. Defined by minimalist lines and warm materials, it is designed for both relaxation and work, offering a retreat from the demands of daily life. HARQUITECTES has crafted more than just a home in HOUSE 1616—it is a living expression of architectural harmony. By blending the rhythms of daily life with the poetics of light, shadow, and space, this house tells a story that transcends its physical form, resonating as a testament to timeless design.
