LANTERN, OMA's first project in Detroit, has officially opened to the public. This initiative was launched by Library Street Collective (LSC) co-founders Anthony and JJ Curis. Led by OMA Partner Jason Long, the project transformed a former commercial bakery and warehouse built in the early 1900s into a multifunctional arts center and public space.

The 22,300-square-foot complex now serves as the new home for two local art nonprofits, Signal-Return and PASC (Progressive Arts Studio Collective). Signal-Return is dedicated to the craft of letterpress printing and book arts, while PASC supports artists with developmental disabilities by providing them with platforms to create and exhibit their work. The new facilities for these organizations include classrooms, studios, and exhibition spaces, fostering artistic creation and education within the community and becoming a hub for public activities.

LANTERN also features artist studios and galleries, offering local artists spaces to create and showcase their work. Additionally, a 4,000-square-foot creative retail space provides opportunities for artists and designers to sell their pieces. All these spaces are centered around a 2,000-square-foot outdoor courtyard, designed as a public space for community use, suitable for events, gatherings, and exhibitions.

OMA's design concept takes full advantage of the building's current dilapidated state, transforming areas missing roofs and end walls into a central courtyard, which serves as the main entrance. This courtyard provides multiple frontages for all tenants, acting as a communal entrance and focal point for activities. The surrounding spaces are meticulously designed to blend modern artistic elements with historical architectural features, creating an environment that is both contemporary and rich in historical context. This fusion of artistic creation, education, and public engagement establishes LANTERN as a new cultural landmark in Detroit, offering a unique artistic experience for residents and visitors alike.
