Lookout Above Litomyšl

At the northwestern edge of the Czech town of Litomyšl, a watchtower assembled from two interlocked discarded shipping containers rises above the landscape, offering the finest vantage point over the Renaissance castle and its surrounding complex. As the sun sets, the panorama of this town—inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999—unfolds in its entirety.

The project forms part of Destinations of Journeys, a public landscape initiative led by the town, which commissioned Atelier-r, a recipient of the Czech Architecture Award, to design a new suburban landmark. The goal was to encourage residents and visitors alike to venture outdoors and encounter the city from a fresh perspective.

The tower’s primary structure consists of two 45-foot shipping containers (13,715 × 2,550 × 2,633 mm). A horizontal cantilevered container acts as the entry passage, grafted onto a vertical container that forms the tower. Its base rests on a reinforced concrete foundation, stabilized by a stepped footing beneath the vertical container. A staircase fabricated from galvanized steel grating ascends to a multi-level viewing platform, where staggered landings double as resting places and open up panoramic views in every direction. The containers retain their original COR-TEN steel surfaces, with protective coatings applied only to the newly added structural elements, preserving the raw simplicity of the material. Crowning the tower is a lightning conductor by sculptor Jan Dostál, titled Mikado, whose slender, refined form lends a sense of lightness and balance to the overall composition.

Beyond its striking form, the structure was conceived with reversibility in mind: the containers can be dismantled and the site restored without damaging the terrain. In this way, the project situates architecture within a global framework, questioning the costs of logistics and resource consumption. By reusing existing objects in a new context, the design experiments with environmentally responsible alternatives. In a time when much feels fleeting, the tower invites reflection: it reminds us that what should endure is not environmental degradation, but the preservation of cultural heritage. The Litomyšl lookout tower thus stands not only as an observation point, but also as a quiet statement on sustainability and human self-awareness.
