  Sculptor’s Apartment

Blurred boundaries in architecture can reveal profound expressions of freedom and transparency. This philosophy anchors Sculptor’s Apartment, a complete renovation of a typical Prague flat by NEUHÄUSL HUNAL. The project was conceived for glass artist Vladimír Bachorík, whose creative pursuits demanded an experimental dialogue between openness and materiality. At the core of this design is the radical removal of doors, fostering a seamless flow of light and spatial continuity that challenges the conventional distinctions of domestic functions.

The architects adopted a hybrid strategy, stripping away all doors and internal partition walls. In their place, gently arched dividers formed from U-profiled glass tiles define the spatial zones. These translucent curves dissolve the boundaries between living and working, public and private, while flooding the interior with natural light. The design further incorporates areas where Bachorík’s own semi-transparent works are displayed, reinforcing the project’s commitment to transparency and material flexibility in service of the artist’s practice.

The building’s existing structural and infrastructural constraints—particularly water supply and drainage—became guiding factors in the design. The bathroom was elevated slightly on a platform, creating both a visual focal point and efficient wastewater management. Meanwhile, the kitchen was reimagined as a multifunctional space supporting both culinary and artistic endeavors. Three gentle arcs of U-profiled glass subtly delineate a cloakroom, storage area, and other utilities, preserving the open plan’s flexibility for future adaptations.

NEUHÄUSL HUNAL’s reductive design language retained only a scraped concrete load-bearing wall as a tactile focal point. The remaining surfaces were finished in smooth white plaster, avoiding material excess and allowing the interplay of glass and light to take visual precedence. Handmade white mosaic tiles define the wet areas of the bathroom and kitchen, while the floors were finished in durable rubber, balancing resilience with comfort. By creating a unified and minimal spatial backdrop, the design not only accommodates Bachorík’s evolving life and work but transforms the apartment into a living, responsive canvas—an architectural organism that actively participates in the resident’s creative journey.
