Stalk Tree-hugger

Jakarta, one of Indonesia's most vibrant cities, now boasts the newly established Stalk Tree-hugger Bar in the heart of its bustling business district. This lively venue exudes a tropical atmosphere, with its avant-garde design incorporating five existing trees that soar up to 30 meters. The treetops are covered with white fabric, creating a canvas that reflects a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow. This space serves multiple commercial functions, providing a tranquil retreat where visitors can immerse themselves in greenery while savoring the flavors of their meal.

The owner reinterpreted the encounter between people and cuisine, collaborating with RAD+ar to design and research a restaurant that adapts to and harmonizes with nature. By integrating digital technology with architectural design, they created a dynamic and flowing canopy that embraces the surrounding trees and greenery. This design offers a comfortable and relaxing environment where visitors can observe the gentle sway of the trees reflected on the canopy, fostering a close connection between people and nature.

Lush greenery conceals the entrance, where visitors first wait in a narrow, verdant foyer. They then walk along a winding path through the forest to reach the treetop bar and restaurant. This 750-square-meter venue is defined by a lightweight steel-timber thatch roof, providing ample shade during the day. As night falls, the roof allows light to shine through, transforming the restaurant into a lantern and becoming an essential element of Jakarta's nightlife, enriching the city's evening landscape.

RAD+ar, through an in-depth exploration of the city, achieves a balance between preserving the natural environment and maintaining significant commercial value. Stalk the Tree Hugger transcends the traditional boundaries of space design, striking a balance between enclosed and open areas. By utilizing translucent fabric materials, it creates an interaction between natural light and artificial lighting. This approach discovers new ways for modern commercial buildings to coexist with their surroundings, thereby inspiring the development of sustainable architecture in Indonesia.
