Terraced Houses Padochov

From an aerial perspective, Terraced Houses Padochov presents itself as a sequence of sculptural forms—like keys on a piano, each volume subtly advancing or receding, composing a silent yet compelling architectural rhythm. Nestled at the heart of Padochov, near the southern Czech town of Oslavany, the project stands in striking contrast to its verdant surroundings. The interplay of staggered white forms across the site creates a visual tempo, echoing the rise and fall of musical notes along a staff.

Designed by ika.architekti, this project reimagines an original plan for three detached houses, transforming it into a cohesive row of six terraced homes. Rooted in the local vernacular of pitched roofs, the design interprets traditional elements into a contemporary language. On a modest rectangular plot, the architects employed strategic volumetric shifts—projecting and recessing parapet lines—to articulate the boundary between dwellings while reducing the overall massing. This modulation not only softens the visual impact but also introduces a dynamic spatial rhythm, subtly reshaping perceptions of village life. Through this composition, the project injects a fresh vitality into Oslavany’s fabric, fostering social interaction and a renewed sense of community.

Each two-storey home is arranged with clarity and purpose. The ground floor includes an entrance hall, garage, cloakroom, and a semi-open kitchen and dining area that extends into a private garden terrace, encouraging seamless interaction during daily routines. At the center, a sculptural spiral staircase connects to the upper floor, where a study, bathroom, technical room, and master bedroom are located. The choice of durable materials throughout reinforces a commitment to both longevity and understated elegance. For architects Tomáš Dvořák and Lenka Bažík, the project is a meditation on spatial lightness and inhabitation. Carefully placed voids between the units allow the architecture to breathe, offering a balance of openness and privacy. Terraced Houses Padochov embodies a refined vision of contemporary rural living, where each home is not merely a structure but part of an unfolding narrative—shaped by human presence and the continuous dialogue between built form and place. Here, ideal living arises not from fixed templates but from the stories we craft within the spaces we call home.
