The Blue Insight Cave Space

Set along the dramatic coastline of Fujian’s Donghai No.1 Highway, The Blue Insight Cave Space emerges as a poetic convergence of landscape and architecture. Amidst a backdrop where the sea meets the sky, a discreet structure nestles against the cliffside—its irregular, organic form partially embedded into the earth. Angular voids and sculpted apertures animate its façade, their interplay with light and shadow echoing the fractured geometry of nearby reefs. From afar, the building seems less constructed than grown, quietly surveying the horizon toward Pijia Mountain Island.

Designed by 3andwich Design in collaboration with He Wei Studio, the project redefines the notion of a public cultural space on the coast. Drawing inspiration from sea caves and coastal erosion patterns, the architecture resists dominance. Instead, it integrates with the terrain as an earth-sheltered volume. A vegetated roof softens its presence, transforming the structure into an extension of the landscape. This green expanse not only pays homage to nature but provides passive thermal regulation, ensuring comfort through seasonal shifts.

From above, the rooftop offers the project’s first encounter: scattered across the grassy surface are skylights shaped like disks, triangles, and elongated cylinders. These sculptural forms evoke marine organisms and serve dual purposes—offering visual delight while ensuring daylighting and cross-ventilation within. Visitors enter through a semicircular passage on the western flank, descending into a series of cavernous interior volumes. Here, mimetic ceiling vaults and columnar supports create a performative spatial language that recalls the erosive sculpting of sea grottos. The seamless continuity between exterior and interior reinforces a sensory relationship with the surrounding environment.

While its silhouette draws the eye, The Blue Insight Cave Space is more than a visual landmark. It is a functional venue for exhibitions, gatherings, and cultural programs—rooted in the local ecology yet open to interpretation. By balancing architectural expression with environmental humility, 3andwich Design articulates a compelling narrative of coexistence—where built form quietly amplifies the natural world rather than competing with it.
