 Tianmu Tsao Residence

Human behavior imparts different definitions to spaces, embedding them with various functions and allowing for flexible changes. When designer LU, YEN-CHUN initially undertook this project, the primary focus was on residential planning. However, during the early design discussions, the community faced issues related to the renovation of old houses. Consequently, the question, "How can we respond to the various possibilities this space might have in the coming years?" became the project's central focus. Given that the owner often hosts gatherings and their family works in media, the originally stable and singular functional space needed to be transformed into a flexible area that could accommodate more possibilities. Thus, based on the foundation of a residence, the space was extended to include functions such as a guest house, filming location, and exhibition space, thereby seeking the greatest common denominator in terms of space utilization.

The residence, a 40-year-old house, requires consideration of how to improve the existing conditions, addressing the misalignment of beams and columns, and integrating new and old construction methods to give the home a fresh appearance while enhancing space utilization. Designer LU cleverly utilized the original columns as central elements to subtly divide the living and dining areas. The seemingly simple design volumes actually contain various functions. Anticipating future urban renewal, the entire space is designed with a combination of metal and wood textures, balancing the color temperature of the space while also reducing future demolition costs. Form follows function, creating an overall effect where each area "borrows" from the other, unrestricted by spatial limitations, bringing a more flexible lifestyle.
