Without Boundaries

A holiday should be a quiet clearing of the mind—an act of emptying out the noise within, leaving a space where the spirit can breathe freely. Designer Zhi-An Zheng employs white space as his design language, extending the calm of unbounded daily life into an atmosphere of leisure. As Marcus Aurelius writes in Meditations Book IV, “Men seek retreats for themselves—houses in the country, by the sea, or in the mountains; yet at any moment you can choose to withdraw into yourself, for nowhere is there more peaceful or freer than within the soul.” This inward retreat becomes the narrative the design seeks to record for its inhabitants.

Stepping inside, a leather-clad screen sets a soft boundary between the entrance and the living room, fulfilling the owner’s wish for a foyer that is unseen from the main space. Natural light slips through the perforated lattice of the partition, lending a gentle glow to the shoe-and-coat area where each return can pause and settle. The atmosphere unfolds along the folded geometry of the screen, shifting gradually from shadow to light. Overhead, a curved ceiling with refined chamfered edges continues this fluid cadence, catching quiet fragments of holiday time. Within the open plan, the room grants its occupants composure and ease. Suspended cabinetry, lifted lightly off the floor, sheds visual weight and sustains an overall sense of transparency and lightness.

MORE
The designer suppresses the linear corridor that once ran through the residence, creating seamless continuity between public and private zones. Subtle contrasting tones at either end quietly signal the transitions between dining, kitchen, and sleeping areas. Slide open the flush door concealed within the wall, and the scene shifts effortlessly between living and bedroom domains, the soft white palette maintaining a tranquil spatial flow. A pure, luminous register suffuses each return home, so that white space is no longer an interval of emptiness but a refuge—an architecture of calm in which one rediscovers the self.
