Fredericia——

A chair defined by simple lines and sturdy construction has long become a quiet companion within everyday life. At times, it is gently moved beside a window, accompanying the reading of a magazine beneath warm daylight; at others, it rests beside a table lamp, awaiting the return of someone late at night. Yet such familiar objects are far from ordinary. They are the result of generations of designers and craftsmen who sought to make furniture more accessible, advancing the belief that design should improve daily life and serve society, allowing traditional craftsmanship to gradually move beyond the realm of elites and into everyday homes.

To trace the history of Danish design is to open a chronicle that forged Scandinavian modernism into a global design language. Within a social climate shaped by democratic ideals and equality, pioneering figures began integrating traditional craftsmanship, human scale, and everyday living into modern design thinking, seeking a balance between function, beauty, and social values. From this movement emerged what would become known as Danish Modern. Founded in 1911, Fredericia was among the key forces behind this transformation, its history closely reflecting the evolution of Danish design culture itself.

During 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen, Fredericia: A Chronicle of Danish Design returns following its debut at Milan Design Week 2026, now presented at Fredericia’s Copenhagen showroom. Bringing together original works, rarely seen vintage furniture, and archival materials never before shown to the public, the exhibition invites visitors to revisit more than a century of Danish furniture design history. “This exhibition is about culture as much as it is about furniture,” says Rasmus Graversen, third-generation owner and CEO of Fredericia.

Throughout the exhibition, iconic works by Børge Mogensen, Hans J. Wegner, and Nanna Ditzel are presented alongside contemporary pieces by Jasper Morrison, Barber Osgerby, and Cecilie Manz. Spanning three generations, the exhibition reveals how Fredericia has consistently embodied human-centred thinking, craftsmanship, and social vision, while demonstrating how design can enrich everyday life and contribute to a broader public good.

The exhibition begins with the core principles underpinning Danish modernism: a human-centred approach to design. Iconic works such as the J39 Chair — widely known as “The People’s Chair” — profoundly influenced contemporary chair design through their timeless proportions and enduring functionality. Designed by Børge Mogensen for the Danish Consumers’ Co-operative Society FDB, the chair emphasised honesty in proportion, structure, and material use, while also addressing the needs of efficient production and stackability through a further reduction and standardisation of form. Its wooden frame, paired with a handwoven paper-cord seat, embodied durability, simplicity, and affordability. Continued in production by Fredericia to this day, the J39 remains one of the most representative expressions of Mogensen’s design philosophy.

The exhibition positions Fredericia as a central force within Danish design culture. From Mogensen’s Søborg Chair and 2213 Sofa to contemporary collections such as Plan, Post, and Pioneer, historic icons are placed alongside modern works to create an ongoing dialogue across generations. Set within environments shaped by art, architecture, and domestic life, the furniture reveals design not merely as a stylistic expression, but as a cultural practice interwoven with broader social values.
