Kengo NAKAMURA’s Contemporary Japanese-Style Painting

 

《Kengo NAKAMURA's Contemporary Japanese-Style Painting》8/10 (六) 也趣開幕,作品題材橫跨流行文化、現代歷史、哲學思想,常使用如Email與社群網路經常使用的繪文字表情符號(emoji)、日本傳統書法以及卡通角色剪影等元素。

 

 

The exhibition "Kengo NAKAMURA’s Contemporary Japanese-Style Painting" celebrated its grand opening on the evening of Saturday, August 10th. Nakamura's work traverses a diverse landscape of themes, weaving together strands of POP culture, modern history, and philosophical reflection. His artistry is a rich tapestry, such as emojis commonly used in emails and social networks, traditional Japanese calligraphy, dialogue boxes from comic books and silhouettes of cartoon characters.
 
 
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

展區一樓以醒目的「Re:」系列串起本次展覽,如同備展期間來回的溝通狀態,右下角的留空對應著交流無止歇,期待更多的新樣貌。而「Hiragana Painting」視覺與文意的反向安排,重辯文字圖像或字畫的當代再現。處於不同文化語境的觀者都能以自身歷練與其產生對話關係。

 
 
On the exhibition's first floor, the striking “Re:” series of works seems to engage in a dynamic dialogue, as if in a continuous exchange throughout the preparatory phase. The vacant space in the lower right corner of the work mirrors an ongoing conversation and hints at the anticipation of emerging new forms. Meanwhile, “Hiragana Painting” presents a reversal of visual and literary meanings, debating the contemporary reproduction of textual images or paintings. This piece invites viewers, regardless of their linguistic background, to engage in a personal dialogue through their own experiences.
 
 
 

 

 

 

二樓展出的「Shinbun Itchi」系列,取材自日本江戶時代禪宗高僧仙崖義梵(1750-1837)的繪畫「○△□」,以及翻轉繪文字表情符號的「Ego Mandala」。藝術家藉由符號、構圖的變化創作,探索佛教中對於「空」的思想,呼應羅蘭‧巴特(Roland Barthes, 1915-1980)對日本文化中留白文化的哲思,對人類「自我」的心靈狀態進行詮釋。「Japanese Frogs」系列作品睽違26年後,於2020年重啟,除了當時借鑒「普普藝術」概念,本次重啟中以日本傳統繪畫中常運用的小動物元素,而青蛙在日本文化中為帶來幸運的吉祥物,以不同於西方藝術的角度,回到日本文化的視角詮釋。

 

 

 

On the second floor, The "Shinbun Itchi" series featured in this exhibition draws inspiration from the painting "○△□" by the Edo-period Zen master Sengai GIBON (1750-1837), as well as works like "Ego Mandala," which transforms pictograms and emoji symbols. Through changes in symbols and composition, the artist explores the Buddhist concept of "emptiness," resonating with Roland BARTHES' discussion on the concept of emptiness in Japanese culture. This exploration serves as an interpretation of the human "self" and its mental state. 

 

 

 

 

 

三樓「Without Me」的世界觀,溫柔包容所有人們的異同。藝術家挪用漫畫家手塚治虫作品中的無名角色剪影,將線條柔和的人體輪廓化為抽象表現,人形體內堆疊多種色彩,對應社會裡一人多角的人生風景,浪漫訴出小人物的重要性。

 

 

 
The third-floor welcomes visitors into the realm of the “Without Me” series, tenderly embracing both the differences and similarities among all people. Drawing inspiration from the silhouettes of unnamed characters in the works of manga artist Osamu TEZUKA, the artist transforms these gentle outlines into abstract forms. By layering multiple colors within these human-like patterns, the artist reflects the complex, multifaceted nature of societal life and romantically underscores the significance of every individual as a vital component of the greater whole.
