Home╱IT’s House

—
"They asked a specialist to evaluate the location and bought the house without ever checking it out," said the designer Jeff Weng regarding the origin of his design, saying that when he first went to the site with the couple, the owners themselves had also never seen the house, which was somewhat dated and suffered from water leakage from its moldy ceilings. At the same time, one of the exterior walls was shoddily constructed and was bound to leak on rainy days, rocking when pushed by hand. Moreover, despite the 3.9-meter high-rise ceiling, the mezzanine floor blocked the lighting and made the overall interior conditions extremely unsatisfactory, rendering the reconstruction of foundation works highly important.

Reinforcing the existing layout and renovating the house, the original uninhabitable space gradually transformed into a natural and luminous duplex apartment. The success of this design lies in the retraction of the mezzanine floor and the increase of ceiling ratio, which increases the lighting capacity by one to two times, thus significantly improving the occupant's experience as a result of ample lighting. Furthermore, since the interior area covers approximately 11 pings only, the primary color scheme of the space focuses on white, complementing the sunlight and spaciousness.

In terms of the overall design, the interior space may appear simplistic and streamlined but features extensive functional objectives. Birch plywood and plain white colors create a vertical dimension next to the staircase, containing a toilet and a washroom inside, with storage space under the exterior staircase, whose square lines are concise similar to woodblocks. The circular handrail of the staircase adds playfulness and excitement to the space with a sense of sophistication, adding more vitality with the gentle leafy branches next to the workspace, coupled with the circular cabinet on the foyer wall, providing a tender atmosphere with an off-axis segmentation design, forming a visual focal point outside the workspace.

Modern micro-homes with mezzanine levels are common. In this case, the downstairs is composed of a high-rise workspace, a living room, and a kitchen island that integrates a dining room, while the upstairs features a master bedroom and a dressing room, as well as a multi-functional space for reading and an occasional guest room for the owner's sister to stay overnight. Utilizing the vertical height as a means to compound functions, the small area can be adapted to the needs of living, thus creating an exquisite home for the couple and their two cats.
