Home╱Japandit Spirit

—
Given the fact that we are unable to travel abroad freely, it is the homeowner's wish that we could incorporate the unforgettable memories that he had seen during his business trip into his home.Speaking about this work, designers Hao-Chien Cheng and Yu-An Chen said that the design is a bit different from the previous ones, as the homeowner prefers the aesthetics of wabi-sabi and is influenced by the minimalism of Scandinavia. In order to harmonize the atmosphere, they used modern techniques to extract the Japanese spirit and create this living space called 'Japandit Spirit'.
Located in the historical district of Taipei, the interior is painted in beige to bring wabi-sabi elegance to the space. At the beginning of the design process, the homeowner was looking forward to a spacious common area, but was also unsure about whether to keep the guest room or not. In response to this, designer Hao-Chien Cheng made an analysis of the frequency of living, as visitors rarely stay overnight and only for a short period of time; based on the space available, he decided to eliminate the guest room layout and use the space for study purposes, giving priority to the owner and his family's living needs. The overall design is open-style; from the study room, living room, kitchen and dining room to the terrace, there are no clear boundaries, so that the common areas can be combined into one unit instead of the conventional layout, showing the freedom and spontaneity in the house. The homeowner used to travel to Europe for business. However, due to the pandemic, he has to work from home. From his desk, he can easily see the blue sky above the terrace. There is no traditional TV wall to block the view. Instead, a TV rack is used. This allows for a clearer and more spacious view. The TV rack is also easily transportable, so that the homeowner can watch Netflix on the sofa or Youtube videos while exercising in the open space because he can turn the angle around in his living room whenever he wants.

Since the homeowner used to travel to Europe for business, he has seen various cultures around the world. Among the countries he has visited, Greece is the most unforgettable one, and he has brought back many souvenirs from there, which are displayed between the two windows. Together with a chandelier hanging over the desk, it forms the entrance of the house. When you enter the house, you can see the warm wooden shelves and the light that are welcoming you home.
Cotton and linen fabrics are used in the curtains and sofas creating a casual look, while the bedroom cabinets with a concrete pattern highlight the rugged imperfection of wabi-sabi. The rattan and wooden dining table, the chairs and sage green kitchen add a natural touch of simplicity to the interior, while the wooden tiles used for the flooring extend to the outdoor terrace, blurring the lines between inside and outside and enlarging the space. The original sliding windows have been replaced with floor-to-ceiling folding doors on the terrace to provide a full view of the windows. The outdoor tables and chairs, with tablecloths laid out, are the perfect place to enjoy a meal. The canopy can be drawn over the terrace in both sunny and rainy days, allowing the homeowners to experience the exotic culture of dining on the terrace, while overlooking the city landscape.
