From Architectural Research to Lived Practice: Reading Social Relations Through the Local

Q. How should architects rethink the relationship between private space and collective interests?

A. As architects, we should not consider private space as an isolated entity. We should understand it as something that has enormous consequences for the lives of others, for the territory, and for the use of resources. I am increasingly interested in the collective implications of personal desires—in the space between what is owned by one person and what affects everyone. The balance depends on how we understand what happens beyond the four walls of private spaces. We need to acknowledge that there is no such thing as a purely interior space. Every space is also an exterior, and unfolds in countless ways toward the outside.

From Architectural Research to Lived Practice: Reading Social Relations Through the Local

Home is never simply a private realm; it can also become a condensed expression of politics, resource distribution, and social relations. Far from being only a place of rest, it exposes the contradictions of contemporary dwelling—between inequality, systems of consumption, and isolation. How, then, might we begin to rethink the boundary of home? In the work and research of Mexican architect Fernanda Canales, the home is not an enclosed interior, but a system of social, material, and territorial relations—one that begins in everyday life and extends outward.
