Open and Close

"I do not define my design in terms of 'style', every single trace on the drawing has a meaning, so as to explore the nature of the space.“ During this interview, designer Kyle Chang expressed his philosophy on design. The essence of space is to define the scope of all activities, a vessel for daily life, where the significance of a vessel lies in the emptiness, and the protagonist of the space lies in those non-spatial daily activities.
The perspective upon entering the foyer is directed to a large window on the central axis, through which the surrounding vegetation serves as a backdrop for daily life. The central space, which is encircled by wood and delicately reflects light, establishes a welcoming stage for daily life. Taking a few steps forward, two movable tables are placed on the right side, and the computer table is concealed behind a lattice door on the left, so that the chair can be turned to work in both directions in this area, and because the owner is a woman living alone, this mediated corridor space can also be used as a work space. The T-shaped floor design organically concentrates space on the living area's core, connecting the bedroom and the kitchen. The texture of the flooring and cabinetry provides perceptual continuity, while the soft media of serpentine drapes and sliding doors, along with mobile furniture, provides functional flexibility. By drawing back the curtain, the living space becomes more expansive and embraces additional options. Set up a single sofa with a moving screen and play video games during your free time.

Closing the curtain and lowering the secret folding bed in the closet can create a separate guest room, allowing children who occasionally return to have their own living space. When entering the bedroom through the sliding door, the two sides of the hallway are unevenly proportioned, with the bed leaning toward the window leaving the narrow side with the minimum width for a single person to walk on, while also serving as a corridor for light when the sliding door is open, allowing more natural light to flood the room. On the opposite side, storage and dressing functions are added to expand the activity area while maintaining the passage's footprint. When the sliding door is closed, the owner's exquisite goods are displayed on the display cabinet, and the sleeping area is tastefully concealed behind it.
The existence of a space is defined from the completion of the construction, by the weaving and interpretation of the user's life behavior. The designer leaves the task of defining the space to the owner himself. This is a performance venue for the body, with no solid partition wall in the space, while the functional range of activities is defined between the opening and closing of two sliding doors and a serpentine curtain in the bedroom, with performances organized by the arrangement of soft furnishings, enabling one to dimension the space with one's body and embark on a performance of daily routines.
