Subverting Norms, Constructing Narrative Scenarios

Q: In Design Director Nic Lee Lee's new book "More or Less" it is mentioned that art can be a source of inspiration for spatial design. Could both of you share your views on the relationship between art and design?

Lee: In terms of form, the approach is to subtly translate aspects like proportions and colors into design, capturing relations with time, similar to art, which is intriguing. It presents a vague and abstract concept that defies precise definition or uniform interpretation by the public, yet it can offer valuable experiences and usage to people.

Ke: Whether it's architecture, space, or art, they all serve as mediums. We use these elements to convey underlying meanings, allowing users to fill in these preconceived experiential gaps. Their true needs will naturally be unearthed through this process.

Subverting Norms, Constructing Narrative Scenarios

This issue's "Features" section takes an in-depth look at the "WATERFROM DESIGN" team. The interview offers a glimpse into how, over the past sixteen years, they have expanded from intricate residential space design to commercial areas. It delves into how they adapt the rhythm according to regional and spatial scale differences, wisely leveraging the nourishment accumulated, and incorporating their unique design philosophy to embed stories deeply within the design, creating spaces that provoke thought and are rich in narrative. The cover case, "Evolving Canva," like WATERFROM DESIGN, challenges the norm and disrupts order with an abstract conceptual layout, leaving the space as a canvas for the owner to continue shaping, inevitably arousing immense curiosity about what it will ultimately become.
