Whitespace

A home should be a sanctuary where residents can unwind and relax after a hectic day. It is a space that provides tranquility and peace of mind. Apart from maintaining a regular routine, there is ample time to leisurely enjoy activities of interest.

The house is thirty years old and features a typical configuration with the balcony serving as the entrance. Although the narrow and elongated balcony allows abundant sunlight into the space, its linear configuration creates an issue of a too distinct and rigid boundary between the interior and exterior. Upon entering the house, there is a clutter of shoes and umbrellas with no suitable place for taking off and putting on. During the rainy season, there is also concern about shoes left outside getting soaking wet. Designer WONG, ZIH-FU from 2BOOKS Design has modified the entry flow of the house. They have recessed the straight balcony at the midpoint, creating a transitional foyer that buffers the indoor and outdoor spaces. The previously no-place-for shoe cabinet also found a stable storage in the recessed corner. In this way, the living room windows, which originally served as the main entrance, have been restored as the 'eyes' of the house, accommodating a full view of the cityscape.

"Only on a blank canvas can one add the colors of life stroke by stroke. "A piano, two individuals, and multiple interests are all woven into this minimally decorated space. The homeowner, with diverse hobbies, hopes for a space where activities can unfold without constraints. By opening up the previously enclosed kitchen to form an open layout that connects with the living room and dining area, the design introduces more possibilities for conversation and extends the path of natural light entering the interior. The combined public area becomes the core of the house, where the kitchen island serves as a link between the elements of daily life and the sounds of laughter and conversation. The living room, devoid of a large TV screen and sofa, allows for more flexibility in its use. On holidays, the homeowner can invite friends and family over to enjoy a barbecue on the balcony nestled in lush greenery, and to bask in the joy under the warm sunlight.

Throughout the home, various corners are adorned with the homeowner's collections and furniture choices. Under the harmonizing touch of designer WONG, ZIH-FU, the off-white painted walls and cave-like symbolic motifs resemble a script structure. African tribal cave-inspired decorative elements, and vases each follow a sense of harmony, becoming chapters in the unfolding story. Behind the large black door panels, there hides a piano, and a window-like opening in the door suggests the presence of melodic music within the space. "A script always requires some twists and turns in its setting," explains the designer, shedding light on the visual surprise arranged on this blank canvas. However, in the pursuit of layering, the materials chosen still maintain their original texture by using untreated iron plates, matching the subdued and gentle atmosphere. "Leaving blank spaces" washes away the complexities of life, returning to a pure and clean white space, allowing freedom to fill in the blanks.
