Upon entering this coastal residence, one is greeted by a harmonious interplay of natural light and carefully curated interiors, imbuing the space with a tranquil, leisurely ambiance. Vibrant colors, diverse forms, and rich textures unite seamlessly, weaving an eclectic home narrative that tells the story of the homeowners’ past, present, and aspirations for the future.
The story begins with a couple who, after living in Boston, decided to return to Taiwan and embark on a new chapter. They turned to OH DEAR studio, a long-time friend and design collaborator. Lead designer Weikang Chen recalls how, in the studio’s early days, the wife often expressed, “One day, you have to design our home!” Years later, this promise was fulfilled. Trust and understanding between friends enabled the project to quickly establish a shared vision. The design team infused their professional expertise into every element, from layout to intricate details, creating a space that truly reflects the couple’s personalities and aspirations.
During preliminary discussions, the homeowners expressed a preference for bright, earthy tones. The residence features two large, south-facing floor-to-ceiling windows. To maximize natural light, the design replaced a window-side partition with sliding wooden doors, allowing the space to flexibly transition between a private workspace and a shared area. This thoughtful adjustment expanded the common area, ensuring a sense of openness. Sheer curtains soften the incoming sunlight, creating a gentle atmosphere while remaining easy to draw aside to enjoy the seasonal shifts and rhythmic waves outside. In the living room, the marble-clad main wall extends to the entryway, ending with a slender black column that subtly defines the interior and exterior spaces. The entryway cabinetry, designed with gaps above and below, adds a sense of lightness and invites sunlight to flow freely through every corner.
Both homeowners, with their backgrounds in music studies abroad, have a clear understanding of their lifestyle needs. They showed remarkable openness when the design team suggested distinctive furniture pieces. The entire residence is grounded in earthy tones akin to soil, fostering a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Dynamic accents add vibrant energy, reflecting the couple's lively personalities and vision for life. In the spacious common area, a striking black kitchen contrasts with the warm-toned backdrop, symbolizing the owners’ culinary passion and focus. At the center, a red Roly Poly chair becomes a bold focal point, highlighting the interplay of function and artistry within the space.
