Dr. Yen-Son (Paul) Huang Memorial Courtyard

In today's fast-paced world, it is easy for people to lose sight of valuable memories worth revisiting, exploring, and commemorating. To preserve these significant pieces of history, monuments have been created in various forms, allowing us to gaze upon and reflect on the past. As generations evolve and time progresses, monuments are now taking on new forms, more tangibly conveying their messages and fostering dialogue with future generations.

The "Dr. Yen-Son (Paul) Huang Memorial Courtyard," officially inaugurated this year at the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Science Building 3, Hsinchu Campus, serves as a monumental art installation that engages in a cross-generational dialogue through contemporary language. This courtyard not only provides students with a welcoming space to walk, sit, and converse, but also subverts the traditional concept of a monument. From above, it resembles a large three-dimensional silicon wafer, serving as an outdoor amphitheater that fosters interaction among faculty, students, and visitors.

JC. Architecture & Design collaborated with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University to create this meaningful monument in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Department of Electrophysics and Dr. Yen-Son (Paul) Huang, the father of EDA (Electronic Design Automation). Dr. Huang, a distinguished alumnus of the second graduating class of the Department of Electrophysics at Hsinchu Chiao Tung University, was also one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the semiconductor industry. Recognizing Dr. Huang's pivotal role in EDA and his foundational contributions to the industry, the university invited JC. Architecture & Design to encapsulate this spirit of contribution in a symbolic manner, transforming it into a functional space that seamlessly connects with the university community.

With this premise in mind, Johnny Chiu, the founder of JC. Architecture & Design, and his team abstractly transformed Dr. Huang’s contributions into a large-scale silicon wafer. The overall structure, made of stainless steel, features an ascending form reminiscent of Dr. Huang gently lifting a wafer with his hands. The irregularly arranged seating on the steps, constructed by the ROSO Robot Manufacturing Laboratory using robotic arms and 3D printing technology, exhibits varying shades of gradient blue and transparency. The seats, designed with water wave patterns, adorn the large silicon wafer in the outdoor plaza, encouraging students to make it a popular new gathering spot for daily campus social interactions.

The seven steps of the "Dr. Yen-Son (Paul) Huang Memorial Courtyard" are inscribed with the words "Tao, Trends, Terrain, Leaders, Methodology, Inclusion, and Path to Success," encapsulating Dr. Huang's principles for entrepreneurial success. Each word provides students with guidance, inspiration, and reflection. Through this monument, the design team hopes to foster more interaction among faculty, students, and visitors. Additionally, they anticipate it becoming an outdoor facility for fostering creativity and academic exchanges, serving as a birthplace for discovering diverse creativity and unlocking infinite potential for the future.
